Dr. Wangari Maathai - Professor and Nobel Peace Prize Winner - Environmentalist

Dr. Wangari Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her campaigns to save Kenyan forests and plant more trees in Kenya.
 
 
She was born on1 April 1940 in Nyeri, Kenya. She studied biology and did her doctorate in veterinary anatomy  at the University of Nairobi.
 
She passed away on 26 September 2011.

Today and tomorrow (Sept 29 and 30) flags in Kenya are half mast. Wangari Maathai will be getting a state funeral, only the 3rd such since Kenya became an independent country almost 50 years ago. The other two were the first president, Kenyatta, and a vice president, Wamalwa.
