Rule of 7.

Earlier I came to know of sharing an article at least three platforms apart from Twitter and your blog. But now I come to know of Rule of 7.  What this means is aggregating your content 7 times. This typically means creating a YouTube video about the content, sharing it on G+, Facebook and sharing the content on other blogs. Just making one post about something on your site and doing nothing with it is a waste of your time and resources.

Becoming a member of relevant community or group, is the best performing activity in social media.

You may need to create multiple messages and test them or try them to get required response for your blog post.

You may have to read various related posts and comments to come out with ideas to promote your own post.

Internationally Networked Data Servers - Internet Data Warehouse - Content Discovery Mechanisms and Platforms

Yahoo and  Google are two interesting major content discovery platforms.

Facebook is not basically a content discovery platform but it is turning into one.  Google+ is more specifically built for content discovery as it is a late entrant into the social media space and Google is the leader in content discovery. So if social media can become the content discovery mechanism, Google wanted a share of it. Google+ is a success so far.

Flipora is a new content discovery platform which will highlight content relevant to you on a continuous basis if you instal a plug in. YouTube is doing it on its platform.

Social Content and Social Content Producers

What is social media?
My definition.
It is collection of papers/periodicals run by each individual participant with an unschedule.

Brian Solis is trying to develop the concept of Social content. There can be traditional media content on Social media platforms. But it is not social content.

Social content is not only consumable but is also shareable and actionable and  acts as catalyst for relevant conversations.

Social content producers  begin with the social media outcomes they wish to see and reverse engineer content strategies to enliven them.

Established and Reputed Publishing Houses Enter Self Publishing Business

Last week Pearson, the owner of Penguin Books, bought one of the largest grassroots publishers, Author Solutions, based in Indiana, in the US, for £74m ($116m).

Author Solutions started in 2007, has marketed and distributed 190,000 titles for 150,000 authors and has grown at a rate of 12% in the past three years.

BookStats, which has collected data from 2,000 publishers across America, including fiction titles, as well as higher education, professional and academic publishing products found that ebook revenues for US publishers doubled to more than $2bn in 2011. 211,000 self-published books made their debut last year, 50% up on the previous year.

John Makinson, Penguin's chief executive, has pointed out that the company is once more in the vanguard position to support the upcoming segment in publishing business.

Social Media and Languages Learning

Social media, media in which individuals are contributing on their own initiatives on subjects and on topics where they have interest, knowledge and expertise is providing unique content that is helpful to a niches of people looking for a particular way of presenting the subject.  Professional media would not have been able to create so much content with that great variety. It is because professionals expect to be paid every day for their efforts and hence they can not cater to small niches. But a large number of social media contributors are first contributing for the thrill of contributing. Some of them hope to receive some income, but even if they do not receive, they are still content with the satisfaction that they created some useful items for people to use. No doubt still large number of social media contributors say a million are receiving some regular monthly payment. But a million across the world is not a big number. Social media is thriving by providing an opportunity to even to a billion people to contribute an item or other to the pool of digitized knowledge.

I am happy to see number of resources being created in social media to learn languages. Presently I am doing a serious effort to learn Japanese and collecting various online resources in this regard. I am collecting the resources into an online book on learning Japanese.  I am happy to see a Japanese to Telugu dictionary today. (Japanese to Telugu dictionary) The dictionary invites all to contribute to improve the dictionary further. It is a good way using large number of people to develop a knowledge resource.

Future of Journalists, Authors and Writers in Digital Economy

Adsense Earnings

I came across a Wall Street Journal Essay "The Economics of Giving it Away"[1] in Mint (A business daily with collaboration of WSJ in India) today ( 2 February 2009). The essay was written by Chris Anderson, Editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine.

The statement that attracted my attention is: "Running Google's Adsense ads on the side of your blog, no matter how popular it may be, will not pay you even minimum wage for the time you spend writing it. On a good month it might cover your hosting fees. I speak from experience." This statement is of interest for many who aspire to make money through writing blogs and internet articles. I argued in some forums that writing is a performing art. First and foremost the artist has an urge to perform. Many have that urge. Only very few of the artists make a lot of money. A large majority of them do not make money sufficient for minimum wage for the time they spend on it. But still they spend time and perform. Why? Because they love to.

Amateur Writers versus Professionals

Chris Anderson is the author of the popular book "The Long Tail". In it he argued that digital economy has made it possible for persons to provide niche services in amateur mode. The service provider is happy to provide and the receiver is happy with the service, an amateur provides. This exchange is undercutting professional mass service. The professional is losing market. According to Andersen, this amateur economy may become as big as mainstream professional economy.

Internet made writing easier. Blogs and now knol make writing more easier and more and more persons are becoming authors, writers and journalists with a minimum number of readers that sustain them. These amateur authors, writers and journalists are here to stay with a small number of readers. Are they undercutting the professional counterparts?

Yes says, Andersen [2]. According to him journalism jobs will be lost and news media could become smaller overall as its role changes in the digital information economy.

Andersen advised professionals to figure out where the market failure is in the amateur internet and do something that still has value and which people will pay for, either directly or in terms of their attention which can be monetised through advertising.

Media professionals have  to figure out how they can do something that adds value to the internet, that people will pay for, and that still costs less than the income that is derived from it. That is the  job, that's business in  the new competitive digital information marketplace.

Trends 2011

Trends 2010

Guardian - Panel discussion on Journalism in Digital Age
http://www.guardian.co.uk/help/insideguardian/2010/apr/14/journalism-trends-tools-technologies

One crucial thing to remember is that the concept of 'journalism' is a separate thing from the concept of running a newspaper

Trends for 2009

Nathan Ketsdever [3] in his blog post "Citizen Journalism and Print Publications Trends for 2009" indicates the following features.

    1. Citizen journalism will certainly see a rise in 2009 as traditional newspapers either die or create hybrid business.

    2. Crowds will fund the news and crowds will provide news.

    3. Hyperlocal journalism will flourish.

    4. News through mobiles will be popular

Increasing Audience for Online News

According to a  We Media/Zogby interactive poll 48% of respondents said their primary source of news and information is the internet, an increase from 40% a year ago, while 55% of those aged 18-29 named the net as their major source. People of 65 and over were less committed to the net, with 35% saying it is their main news source [4].

Entrepreneurial skills - Important for Journalists in the New Age

"We live in an entrepreneurial age, not an institutional one. That's been true of many professions for quite a while, and increasingly (and perhaps somewhat belatedly) it is true of journalism. The people having the most satisfying careers, it seems to me, are those who create a distinct signature for their work -- who add value to the public conversation through their individual talents -- rather than relying mostly on the reputation and institutional gravity of the organization they work for." -- John Harris, telling PressThink why he left the Washington Post for Politico.com [5].

Harris left the Post for a well funded startup in Politico (part of Allbritton Communications). There have been more examples of journalists who have created their own mini-media enterprises online: Rafat Ali at PaidContent, Om Malik at GigaOm, Debra Galant at BaristaNet, Josh Marshall at TPM Media, Henry Abbott at TrueHoop (now owned by ESPN), and on and on. But journalism schools have been slow to teach the necessary business and entrepreneurial skills that many graduates will need. Now they are catching up.

There is an entrepreneurial journalism class at City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism and it is  taught by longtime BuzzMachine blogger and the school's director of interactive journalism, Jeff Jarvis. A new class is started at Berkeley, Launching an Entrepreneurial Business,  with journalism-school assistant dean Marcia Parker and business school lecturer David Charron co-teaching the class. The Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship is coming up at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.

Law Thinkers and Law Makers - Different Roles

Democratic societies have parliaments or legislatures for making laws. The laws makers or legislators are elected persons. There are aptly called representatives of people and their job is to represent the desires of people. The desire for a law emanates from people and the legislatures pool the thoughts of a large number of people through the discussions of various members in the legislatures and craft the final piece of legislation.

Most of the times, the legislators are not the original thinkers of the laws. The original thinker may be somebody and the thought spreads among people for quiet sometime before it becomes visible as the desire of significant number of people and reaches the legislator as an issue to be evaluated for further action. Legislators can't tell not to think about the law and requirement of a new laws or repeal of old laws. Law is not the exclusive prerogative of legislators.

This issue came to the surface recently in India, in the case of anti-corruption law. There is movement demanding enactment of anti-corruption law in the form a "Lokpal" institution and the people spearheading the movement created a draft law. The legislators felt offended and said law making is their prerogative. Yes, law making is their prerogative. But not thinking about the need for new laws and for the repeal of old laws. Law thinkers come from people and they present their case though various channels. It is no doubt the law makers through the power delegated to them through the voting process enact the final laws.

The issue now comes up to the fore in USA in the context of SOPA and PIPA bills. The people who are advocating for the passing of these bills seem to be content creators and publishers of the content. Most importantly it is the publishers of the content who are making a plea for such acts. But as we see in the various social networks, bulk of the people are against laws. Are law thinkers against such laws in USA as well as all over the globe. Internet made millions of people content creators and brought in new publishing platforms. The existing business models of publishing are losing their relevance and laws to continue these outdated publishing models are not desired by people.
