Websites, Blogs, and Knol/Article Portfolios - Visitors and Page Views

Information about visitors and page views is of interest to persons thinking of developing web sites, blogs and writing knols and other articles. It will be of interest to persons developing video portfolios on sites like youtube, photo portfolios on sites like flickr etc.

While the details of top sites are easily available they may not be immediate interest to new entrepreneurs. They will be more interested in medium size or average web site information as they can plan to reach that level of performance within a reasonable period.

Page Views, Visitors and Advertisement Income from Knol and Other Article Sites

There are online authors and bloggers getting million page views a month. There are many bloggers and online authors making above $1000 income per month. How many of them can be there. It can be a global figure of 500,000+. This in in terms of web sites and blogs. But as in many top blogs and web sites number of online authors are working, this number can be much bigger figure in terms of individuals.

An author writes for income, in the case of online articles it is advertisement income
An author writes because he has to write as professional responsibility teachers, trainers,  employed journalists, employment technical documentation writers.

Has Blogging Reached Its Peak? No. There is Lot of Headroom Still

Is Blogging Dead?

Has Blogging Reached Its Peak?

There are many authors writing on this issue and some concluding that blogging has reached its peak. But has it reached its peak in terms of readership? No.

I made a collection of blog bench marks in the article Is your blog successful?
45,000 page views per month can be taken as a successful blog.

Blogpulse.com indicates on 1.1.2012 that there are 181 million blogs.
New blogs are being generated at the rate of 90,000 blogs per day.

If a million blogs out of 181 million blogs roughly 0.5% of the blogs aim to be successful blogs with page view of 50,000 per month, these top one million blogs can have 50 billion page views.

The present total page views for entire blogosphere can be estimated as 15 billion page views per month. The estimates is based on around 5 billion page views per month for Blogspot blogs. Compare 50 billion page views per month for top one million blogs with total 15 million page views for entire blogosphere now. We can see the headroom available for blogs to grow.

What is required to be done to promote blog readers?

Bloggers have to be made aware of the possibility of growth in readership and page views for their blogs and they have to be assisted in promoting their content. Creating a list of top million blogs can be an important step. Alexa has top million websites. An exclusive top million blog list is also required.

Internet Users - Data as on 31st March 2011

2,095,006,005  Internet users
6,930,055,144 World Population

Source: http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm  accessed on 1.1.2012
World population crossed 7 billion now. There is scope for rapid increase in internet users in countries like India. Educational blogs are yet to come into full use.

To estimate the potential of blogosphere we can think of one visit to blog each day by each internet user as a bench mark. That  gives 2 billion page views per day for blogosphere with the current internet users. It gives the complete potential as 7 billion page views per day.

Similarly we can think for websites that provide various facilities and maintained by various commercial and service organizations, around 3 visits per day each internet users.

What about news sites? What about entertainment sites? What about social networks? We need to come out with some benchmarks for them.

Is Your Blog a Successful Blog? Blog Benchmarks

Bench Marks for Personal for-Audience Blog

1000 page views a month - You are an upcoming blogger. You have to potential to grow your readership further.

10,000 page views per month - You are now a steady blogger.

45,000 page views per month - You are a popular blogger.

Benchmarks for Business Blogs

Small business  1000 to 2000 visitors per month

Medium Business: 10,000 to 20,000 per month

Large Business: 50,000 to 100,000 per month

Source:
http://www.searchenginepeople.com/blog/business-blog-benchmarks.html

1000 page views per month per Blog - Is it above Average?

Yes. See the data below.
from Top 1000 sites data from Double click planner

Data of July 2011

Blogspot
Unique visitors: 340 million
Page views: 4.9 billion
If you assume 50 million blogs exist on Blogspot : 98 page views per blog/month is the average
If assumption is 40 million blogs: 122.5 pv per blog/month is the average
If assumption is 30 million blogs: 163.3 pv per blog/month is the average.

So 1000 pv per month certainly is a good number for classifying a blog as an above average blog.

How many blogs are there on Blogger. No official figure.
For comparison, Tumblr claims 39,192,106 blogs on 1.1.2012
Wordpress also claim around 35 million+ blogs hosted on Wordpress.com

As we observed that Blogger has 4.9 billion page views, we may estimate that entire blogosphere has 10 billion page view. We can stretch it to 15 billion page views per month.

But what will happen if one million blogs  target 50,000 page views per month.  This will give 50 billion page views the top million blogs alone. So blogosphere has a lot more to achieve in increasing its readership.
