In 2010, the author observed  a trend. Most bloggers who responded to the survey were making about 1% of their monthly pageviews. It means, if a blogger got 40,000 pageviews per month, they he is making roughly $400 a month. If he  got 400,000 pageviews per month, the income would be  about $4000 a month. Definitely it could be visitors from USA. Also it is written that it was through display ads which firms used to give. But this changed now also.

It is very tough making even minimum every month on internet. Making decent money to make a living. It is an uphill task even for moderately successful persons. The middle class of internet contributors have to do many jobs to take care of themselves.

2 Million AdSense Accounts for 7 Billion Population - Is It Ok?

Currently Adsense home page says there are 2 million+ AdSense publishers.

The World population is now 7 billion.

This gives 1200 internet users for one account. Can they give reasonable income?

Average American internet user is spending 8 to 10 hours per day online. 80% is spent in mail, facebbook, Twitter and Search. Only 20% is spent for content reading for leisure. May be it means, 80% of the time is spent for business reasons or business related transactions and only 20% is spent for leisure transctions. During leisure time he may visit about 15 pages. The pages may contain 2 to 3 ads per page. ATKearney estimates that it will translate to 6 cents per users at $1.80 per 1000 ad impressions.

This means that average site can have 7200 cents per day, which is 72 dollars per day. It is plausible if 1200 visitors are visiting 18,000 pages a day. Or it can be interpreted that on an average the adsense publishers can have 18,000 page views per day. Interesting number.

AdSense Policies to Stop Plagiarism and Discourage Promotion of Plagiarised Content

If your website or blog contains copy-right content in any page, AdSense will be removed when it Google AdSense people come to know of it in their automatic scrutiny or when someone complains.

Also if your site contains links to sites that are hosting copy right materials without permission, AdSense will be removed when it finds out in its scrutiny process or when a complaint is received.

This is a good policy to bring discipline in online world. I came across certain site expressly writing that people are not allowed to link to material in that site without permission. So AdSense publishers have to take note of this condition also. If a site prohibits linking, AdSense publishers can't link to that site. Normally sites encourage linking to get traffic to their sites. But there are some sites writing very clearly upfront that linking is not permitted.

Embedding of YouTube Videos

Many YouTube videos are not posted by their copy right owners but by others. AdSense publishers may have to be careful with this situation also. As a precaution, it will be prudent if only videos of YouTube partners are embedded. Some YouTube videos have prohibited embedding. There is no issue as you one can't embed them.

In the field of Security Analysis, the subject I teach, making money is an important phrase. When anybody explains a new analytical idea, immediately people ask, are you making money? Making money is the name of the game in stock market trading.

Making money also became the term of choice in the internet world or web world. A lot of hype about the internet and web revolved around millions and billions made by entrepreneurs by setting up websites.

Blogging added to the hype as there were number of bloggers who made good amounts of money by setting up blogs. Many of them are referred to as professional bloggers now. Professional bloggers are managing small size media properties or small size book publishing businesses. There are many bloggers who are blogging as the blogs are now tiny income earning hobby or an extracurricular or extra-professional activity for them. Internet made it possible for many people to strike their own and display their writing skills, photography skills, animation skills, video making skills, singing skills etc. Free hosting sites further made this activity more easy and less capital demanding.

Google knol is a site that allow people to display many of their skills on a global scale. It provides a single window to display writing skills, photography skills, animation skills, video making skills, singing skills and presentation skills. A knol can contain an essay or an article on any topic about which people are looking for information,  photographs, audio or videos from youtube, presentation slides, and pdf files. Thus on any topic, a person can provide information through various multimedia alternatives. He can expect some money from this activity as knols contain google adsense advertisement at the option of the author and adsense income acrues to the account of the author. There is an opportunity to making money.

Have You Registered With Adsense?

Registering with adsense is easy. At the top your knol, there is a preference button. If you press on it you go to a dashboard wherein there is a button for adsense. Click on it and you get options related to adsense. If you do not have adsense account there is provision for taking you to adsense account. Go to the adsense account give your gmail id and open the adsense account or complete the registration with adsense. Then give the same gmail id in knol preferences related to adsense. Adsense advertisement start appearing in your knols shortly.

Who is Making Money?

While the opportunity is there for making money, is anybody making money on knol?

Before answering the question regarding knol, which is relatively a new publishing platform, the performance of writers on other publishing platforms can examined.

• See an interesting knol by EireItaliaFam eHow Earnings and Residual Writing Income. The knol gives monthly account of earnings of the writer on eHow.com.

Problogger from their survey gives the information that from a sample of 4145 bloggers, 383 people are making $20,000 per month.

There are 18 million bloggers in USA alone on blogspot platform. How many of them are making reasonable amount of money?

A Good and Reasonable Answer from Hubpages Blog

OK, already, can’t you give me any dollar amount for an average hubber?
Well, assuming that you focus on providing valuable content to your reader, then here is the number that I’ve heard. If you do, say, 10 reasonable quality hubs each month for 10 months, then by month 11, you should be making roughly $50/month. Many authors make more than this and the web traffic is the limit for professional writers. Still, for the hard worker with average talent, $50/month should be achievable.

The facts from Knol: Kevin Spaulding  is the author having highest number of page views. The number is 420,291 page views on 24.6.2009. Assuming adsense earnings at the rate of $100 per 75,000 page views, this translates to around $500 in the first year. Is it dismal?. At the first instance it may look so, but there are many case histories like this. A film distribution company got into an arrangement with Youtube and hosted films on the site. In the initial month, the income was only in single digits. But two years down the line, there are now very happy. It is a sizeable business now. So content is the king. If you have the ability to develop content, there is scope to make money on knol. I feel significant number  of knol authors will certainly make money like the bloggers above.

In the Month of September, the page views to my knol portfolio crossed page views of my blog portfolio and adsense revenues so far in the month are ahead of blog portofolio revenues. I got a revenue that is around the indicated figure by hubpages.  Yes, knol is generating adsense revenue.

Tips for Making Money

I like the tip. Personally am I making $50 a month in the first year on knol? No, because my page views are now around 15,000 per month. What should be my next year expectation. Around 45,000 page views per month by the end of the next year. 15,000 page views from new knols that I am going to write and additional 15,000 from the portfolio effect. It could be also a different expectation. I have five or six knols that have more than 5000 page views. Can I write 100 knols of that popularity. That may give 100*5000. 500,000 page views. Per month extra 42,000 page views. Combined it may give me 55 to 60 thousand page views. So my expectation at this point of time can be between 45,000 page views per month to 60,000 page views per month. A small step that may give me the foundation and additional experience in online writing. Anything extra above this range can be a bonus.

Update on 16.4.2012

I reached a peak of 114,000 page views per month on Knol. At the end of the first, the number was 15,000 page views per month (may not be in Google Analytics). But in October 2011, the number was 114,000 per month in Google Analytics data.

But there are authors who got page views 100,000 per a single knol. They can plan for bigger page view numbers by writing some more knols and updating the existing knols.

Above 5000 page views per year: Super knol

4000 to 5000 pv per year: Excellent knol

3000 to 4000 pv per year: Very good knols

2000 to 3000 pv per year: good knol

1000 to 2000 pv per year: Above average knol

500 to 1000 pv per year: Average knol

250 to 500 pv per year: Satisfactory

Below 250: Below expectation knol.

Analyze the performance of your knol and understand the reasons for its acceptance by visitors and search engines.  Continuously try to upgrade your knols into higher category of knols. Make judgments on your knol portfolio. What are you capable of? What is the category into which majority of your knols fall? Why? How much time do you take to create one knol? Can you bring the time down? Would you like to increase the time you spend on a knol and improve its category? Do you feel by spending more time you can increase its popularity? The decision to improve an existing knol versus starting a new knol depends on expected performance. When you believe improving an existing knol will give better perfomance, you will improve existing knols. But keep in mind, you have to respond to a comment asking you to improve your knol. Then there is no choice issue. If you do not respond to a comment, your knol's performance can deteriorate. Choice is there for your voluntary decision to improve an existing knol or write a new one in the time that you can devote to writing.

Marketing management has two important stages. In the first stage, we need to find out what the market wants. In the second stage we need to communicate to the market that we have a product or service that will satisfy that want. The first stage is generally described by marketing research and the second stage is referred to as marketing communications. Every blogger has to utilize various social media platforms to inform potential readers his blogs and blog posts. One has to create five to seven back links for each of the blog posts.

Technorati recently made a survey of bloggers and came out with interesting information. Every knoller who is thinking of making money through knols needs to read it.

What is a Blog?

Wikipedia defines blogs as:

A Blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.


There are 76,000 blogs with Technorati Authority of 50+

Among those with advertising, the mean annual investment in their blog is $1,800, but it’s paying off.

The mean annual revenue is $6,000 with $75K+ in revenue for those with 100,000 or more unique visitors per month.

Note: median investment and revenue (which is listed below) is significantly lower.

The report tells you that there are around 184 million writers already who are trying to write blogs. All of them potentially can write on knol also.

You have to decide you area of strength and specialty where you can provide material of some uniqueness so that reader after reader comes to your article or knol. Reader after reader will come only if there is a word of mouth. People recommend your knol to others.

You need to create a circle of persons to whom you can intimate immediately after writing a knol and some them will read your knol.

There is scope of for money. But it is a long way. First you must love your art. You must have the interest to communicate your knowledge and thoughts to people. And do it well and consistently. Practice and accepting suggestions of readers will improve our articles. Then money may follow.

If you get 1000 visitors per day, you get $1 to $3 per day. This statement is reasonable statement. On blogs people may be making more. But on article platforms where advertising options are extremely limited, this income is the norm. On Knol also, similar income only will be earned.

He recommends writing 800 to 1200 word articles and gives number of other useful tips.

He said he knew at least five hub page authors  who regularly earn in excess of $2000 per month from their content and some might earn much more. But they are people who have worked extremely hard to achieve.
Anybody has to work very hard and very smart as well by understanding the nuances of the activity by reading others suggestions and participating in forums. If an author  writes 10 hubs in 18 months and then bemoans lack of earnings, nobody can help him. You need to write number of articles as well as ensure that there is reader interest and reader utility in them.

Titles/Topics - "I never write a hubpage with an identical or very similar title to another existing hubpage, unless that hubpage is very poor quality." It seldom works to compete with a reasonably popular existing page in the article platform. Use Keyword Tool to identify popular keyword phrases and search your article platform and then using Google search articles on other platforms. Write articles for titles having  popular medium or long-string keyword phrase and has some revenue potential.  No point of writing articles if there is no interest from readers.

Using Twitter: "I tweet every hubpage."  Twitter is a nofollow website. But certain other sites pick up twitter messages and they give dofollow links.

"I ensure that each of my hubs is bookmarked at  three bookmarking sites and  on a personal blogger site." You need to develop backlinks for the success of your articles.

"Tagging has become one of my absolute priorities." We knol authors are not using category feature provided by Knol.

According to me all the ideas given in this account by Ryankett are logical and benefit authors. Knol authors need to notice them and use them.

Visit for a criticism of the payment system of Associatedcontent.com. Based on my experience with Adsense I do not agree with the arguments of the author. But the author tries to advocate that one can create a website of his own and make more money than contributing to article platforms. So an author has an option or choice. He can weight the benefits of having his blog or website versus publishing in an article platform which imposes more restrictions on him.
