Rule of 7 to Promote Online Content

12.5.2022

I came across this blog post yesterday and Once again started to comply with rule of 7. Shared today the post given below in four blogs.

17.1.2012

Earlier I came to know of sharing an article at least three platforms apart from Twitter and your blog. But now I come to know of Rule of 7.

I try to use the rule of 7. What this means is aggregating your content 7 times. This typically means creating a YouTube video about the content, sharing it on G+, Facebook and sharing the content on other blogs. Just making one post about something on your site and doing nothing nothing with it is a waste of your time and resources.

Internationally Networked Data Servers - Internet Data Warehouse - Content Discovery Mechanisms and Platforms

Yahoo and  Google are two interesting major content discovery platforms.

Facebook is not basically a content discovery platform but it is turning into one.  Google+ is more specifically built for content discovery as it is a late entrant into the social media space and Google is the leader in content discovery. So if social media can become the content discovery mechanism, Google wanted a share of it. Google+ is a success so far.

Flipora is a new content discovery platform which will highlight content relevant to you on a continuous basis if you instal a plug in. YouTube is doing it on its platform.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

Each and every knol author has to learn and use search engine optimization to the extent possible. Many of us do not do, but we have to do. I am also trying to read, study and learn SEO. I am developing this knol notes in that endeavor, I already gave number of knols above. I am also going to give more references in the body of this article as appropriate and relevant.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of engineering or redesign of web pages and gaining quality links from other web sites in an effort to acquire positioning or ranking on the web's major search engines and directories. (Richard Gay et al., Online Marketing)

Internet marketers have to know SEO to get visibility for  their web store or web bill board. Knol authors also need to know SEO to get visibility for their knol. Knol management will not do any SEO for any individual knol and it is up to each knol author to understand SEO and develop his knol.

Theory of SEO requires basic operational knowledge of HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) used in creating web documents.

The Importance of Title or Title Tag

All search engines pay more attention to what is in the page title. Even though page titles have to appeal to users and hence have to developed keeping users in mind, they need to be developed keeping in mind search algorithms used by top search engines.

Key Words

There is provision for key word tag in HTML. These key words are used by search engines. Where are key words in Knol? There is no provision for key words. But there is a provision for categories in knol. May be they do the work of the key words. Many knol authors have not used this feature. I also did not use this features on most of my knols? Are we missing something?

Titles of Sections

In the knol formatting, we can use three types of titles for sections and subsections in a knol. These section titles are used by search engines to pick up your knol for a search query and for ranking. So use titles liberally and appropriately in your knols.

External and Internal Links in Knols

This is an important point. Many knol authors are marketers. I advise them to write a very informative article. Don't write three lines thinking that you will get the benefit of a link. There are some an active knol authors, who are  flagging or indicating knols created for link building and marketing. Yes, they are doing a right job. More knol authors will join them in due course of time to protect the integrity of knol. Knol is there to provide knowledge to people. The basic reason why a knol should exist is to provide the knowledge that its title indicates. So the knol author-marketers (knol authors whose main motto is marketing their web site) should include only one link for a page of their web site. Linking has to be relevant and appropriate. If you are article is very good linking is efficiently provided by your signature itself that has a link to your site. Visitors will come and visit your site, if your article has provided value to them.

Internal links also have to be relevant and appropriate to provide easy and comfortable reading and also to reduce annoyance of the reader. Don't link a word to an irrelevant knol page and annoy your reader.

Building Backlinks for Knol

Backlinks are links to your in other websites. Suppose other knol authors mention your knol and its link in their knol. There is some benefit for you in terms of search engine ranking. Having a link in some other page is always beneficial because a visitor may use the link and visit your page. So a link has at least two benefits. One is the visitor comes directly using the link and the second is the page rank in the search engine rankings improve.

The simple tools for backlink building

1. Submit URLs to search directories. (Can knol platform do it for all knols or some most viewed knols and relieve the authors of this burden. Knol help has not clarified on this point so far. But we can assume that knol is indexed by all search engines big or small. But there is a concept in search. Even though, knol as a site is indexed, there is no guarantee that each and every knol is indexed. Hence, many authors have to be proactive in  building links for their knols.
2. Submit knols to article directories
3. Participate in Forums
4. Write good content which is used and quoted by other authors in their articles and web pages.
(Source: http://www.seo-news.com/     )
5. Create bookmarks in social bookmarking sites.
Xomba, Digg, Stumbleupon, Snipsly, etc.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Exotic Things in SEO and SMO

The REL=canonical tag is definitely something that should be included on every page of your site.  This tag solves a lot of potential duplicate content problems and there is no reason it shouldn’t be a standard part of your code. (Source: http://www.businessol.com/seo-blog/2009/10/catfish-is-back-whats-new-in-seo-for-2010.html   )

There is a tool that  allows you to ask the question, of all the people that I am seeing as bookmark traffic, or alternatively, of all the people who typed my company name into Google, how many were exposed to a specific social media site, video, press release, Website mention, web page with a static advertisement, or any other digital asset. This helps in assessing Social Media ROI (Businessol, cited above).

SEO Basics - Search Engine Optimization Made Easy

Author
Aaron Wall

Source: Article posted on Knol under creative commons 3.0

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art and science of publishing and marketing information that ranks well for valuable keywords in search engines like Google, Yahoo! Search, and Microsoft Bing.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art and science of publishing and marketing information that ranks well in search engines like Google, Yahoo! Search, and Microsoft Bing. If you run into any new jargon while reading this Knol consider looking up their definitions using the Search Engine Marketing Glossary.

By default, many search engines show only 10 results per page. Most searchers tend to click on the top few results. If you rank at the top of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP), business is good, but if you are on the second or third page you might only get 1% of the search traffic that the top ranked site gets.

The two most powerful aspects of search engine marketing are:

users type what they want to find into search boxes, making search engines the most precisely targeted marketing medium in the history of the world
once you gain traction in the search results the incremental costs of gaining additional exposure are negligible when compared with the potential rewards, allowing individuals and small businesses to compete with (and perhaps eventually become) large corporations

While many people consider SEO to be complicated, I believe that SEO is nothing but an extension of traditional marketing. Search engine optimization consists of 9 main steps:

market research
keyword research
on -page optimization
site structure
link building
brand building
viral marketing
adjusting
staying up to date

Market Research

Do you have what it takes to compete in a market?

The first step is to search the major search engines to see what types of websites are ranking for words which you deem to be important. For example, if mostly colleges, media, and government institutions are ranking for your most important terms it may be difficult to rank for those types of queries. If, on the other hand, the market is dominated by fairly average websites which are not strongly established brands, it may be a market worth pursuing.

You can extend out the research you get from the search results by using the SEO for Firefox extension with the Firefox browser. This places many marketing data points right in the search results, and thus lets you see things like

site age
Google PageRank
inbound link count
if any governmental or educational sites link at their site
if they are listed in major directories
if bloggers link at their sites

The blue area under this CreditCards.com listing shows a wide array of marketing information.
Keyword Research

What keywords are people searching for?

Use the SEO Book Keyword research tool to search for popular and Long Tail keywords related to your industry. This tool cross references the Google Keyword Tool, Wordtracker, and other popular keyword research tools. Notice how our keyword tool provides daily search estimates and cross references other useful keyword research tools.

Keyword research tools are better at providing a qualitative measure than a quantitative measure, so don't be surprised if actual traffic volumes vary greatly from the numbers suggested by these tools. When in doubt you can also set up a Google AdWords account to test the potential size of a market.

In addition to looking up search volumes for what keywords you think are important, also take the time to ask past customers how they found you, why they chose you, and what issues were important to them in choosing you.

You can also get keyword ideas by doing things like

checking your web analytics or server logs
looking at page contents of competing websites
looking through topical forums and community sites to see what issues people frequently discuss

Site Structure

How should you structure your site?

Before drafting content consider what keywords are your most important and map out how to create pages to fit each important group of keywords within your site theme and navigational structure based on

market value
logical breaks in market segmentation
importance of ranking in building credibility / improving conversion rates

You may want to use an Excel spreadsheet or some other program to help you visualize your site structure. This mini-screenshot from an Excel spreadsheet shows example data for how you might align keywords for a section of a site focused on home based businesses, start ups, and franchise opportunities.

Make sure

your most important categories or pages are linked to sitewide
you link to every page on your site from at least one other page on your site
you use consistent anchor text in your navigation
you link to other content pages (and espeically to action items) from within the content area of your website

If you are uncertain how deep to make a portion of the site, start by creating a few high quality pages on the topic. Based on market feedback create more pages in the sections that are most valuable to your business.

On Page Optimization

It is hard to rank for keywords that do not appear in your page content, so each page should be organized around the goal of ranking for a specific keyword phrase, with some related phrases and related keywords mixed into the page copy.

Unique descriptive page titles play a crucial role in a successful search engine optimization campaigns. Page titles appear in the search results, and many people link to pages using the page title as their link anchor text.

If possible create hand crafted meta description tags which complement the page title by reinforcing your offer. If the relevant keywords for a page have multiple formats it may make sense to help focus the meta description on versions you did not use in the page title.

As far as page content goes, make sure you write for humans, and use heading tags to help break up the content into logical sections which will improve the scanability and help structure the document. When possible, make sure your page content uses descriptive modifiers as well.

Link Building

Search engines view links as votes, with some votes counting more than others. To get high quality links (that help your site rank better) you need to participate in the social aspects of your community and give away valuable unique content that people talk about and share with others. The below Google TouchGraph image shows a small graphic representation of sites in the search field that are related to SeoBook.com based on linking patterns.

In this post Matt Cutts suggested that Google is getting better at understanding link quality. Search engines want to count quality editorial votes as links that help influence their relevancy algorithms.

Link building tips

try to link to your most relevant page when getting links (don't point all the links at your home page)
mix your anchor text
use Yahoo! Site Explorer and other tools to analyze top competing backlinks
don't be afraid to link out to relevant high quality resources

Link building strategies

submit your site to general directories like DMOZ, the Yahoo! Directory, and Business.com
submit your site to relevant niche directories
here is more background on directories and SEO
if you have a local site, submit to relevant local sites (like the local chamber of commerce)
join trade organizations
get links from industry hub sites
create content people would want to link at
here is a list of 101 useful link building strategies

Brand Building

Brand related search queries tend to be some of the most targeted, best converting, and most valuable keywords. As you gain mindshare people will be more likely to search for your brand or keywords related to your brand. A high volume of brand -related search traffic may also be seen as a sign of quality by major search engines.

If you build a strong brand when people search for more information about your brand, and other websites have good things to say about your brand, these interactions help to reinforce your brand image and improve your lead quality and conversion rates.

Things like advertising and community activity are easy ways to help improve your brand exposure, but obviously branding is a lot more complicated than that. One of my favorite books about branding is Rob Frankel's The Revenge of Brand X.

Viral Marketing

Link building is probably the single hardest and most time consuming part of an effective SEO campaign, largely because it requires influencing other people. But links are nothing but a remark or citation. Seth Godin's Purple Cow is a great book about being remarkable.

The beautiful thing about viral marketing is that creating one popular compelling idea can lead to thousands of free quality links. If your competitor is building one link at a time and you have thousands of people spreading your ideas for you for free then you are typically going to end up ranking better.

In SEO many people create content based around linking opportunities. Many of us refer to this as Link Baiting. You can learn link baiting tips from

You can search social news or social bookmarking sites like Digg or Del.icio.us to see what stories related to your topic became popular.
Measuring Results

Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half.
- John Wanamaker

How can I tell if my SEO campaign is effective? The bottom line is what counts. Is your site generating more leads, higher quality leads, or more sales? What keywords are working? You can look at your server logs and an analytics program to track traffic trends and what keywords lead to conversion.

Outside of traffic another good sign that you are on the right track is if you see more websites asking questions or talking about you. If you start picking up high quality unrequested links you might be near a Tipping Point to where your marketing starts to build on itself.

Search engines follow people, but lag actual market conditions. It may take search engines a while to find all the links pointing at your site and analyze how well your site should rank. Depending on how competitive your marketplace is, it may take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of years to establish a strong market position. Rankings can be a moving target, since at any point in time,

you are marketing your business
competitors are marketing their businesses and reinvesting profits into building out their SEO strategy
search engines may change their relevancy algorithms

What are Keywords?

Keywords are words that are used to search information in Search Engines that refers to a specific topic. Keywords can vary like Singular Keywords, Plural keywords, Strong Keywords, Weak Keywords, Global Keywords, Local Keywords; Misspelled Keywords, Sesonal Keywords and Long Tail Keywords.
Favorite Favorite or Bookmark this Knol as the author will be filling the space constantly. Feel Free to view Author Biography. Join Jag's Facebook Fans Club. Website: www.SEOaDay.com

How Keywords work?

When you search for information using a Keyword[1], the Search Engine looks for all the indexed pages in the database contacting the specific word or words (Called as keywords). If you try for a Keyword 'SEO and SMO' then the search engine will look for the pages that contain the words 'SEO and SMO'. Despite you will see topics that relates to only SEO and as well you will also find topics that only relates to SMO. If you need the search result that includes both 'SEO and SMO' then you have to use an advance operator " ". Here an example advance search Keyword "SEO and SMO" to check the web search results that has all words and following the exact order of words. You can read more on advance operator section below..

Types of Keywords

Keywords are of many types that vary to the individual human behavior. Keywords are not created they are formed. Sometimes Today's Keywords will not be Tomorrow's. Even there are Keywords that get disappeared. For example, if a Keyword is based on a specific technology and the technology is outdated than people will not be searching for those words and obviously the Keywords will be disappeared or can be changed to some other form based on the versions and future technology. Likewise same for many industries. Here are the types of Keywords that can give you more idea.

(1) Singular Keywords:

Form of a word that is used to search a single piece of product or niche information. Singular Keywords had to be used according to the need and generally Keyword formation should be smart.
For example, a singular keyword can be something like - book and can't be like - Cricket shoe. People will search for shoes and not shoe.

(2) Plural keywords:

Form of a word that is used to search more than one specific object or range of information. Compared to the above example Plural keywords can be used like - Cricket shoes and it is meaningful and the simple difference between the singular and the plural is an “s” or “es” at the end of the word.

Now a day, Google and other major search engines are smart enough to find the relationship between plural and singular. Google also index and values singular keywords for some of the targeted plural keywords based on the people search behavior. That is, users who search for the plural keywords may still get benefit out of web pages that focus the singular keywords.

(3) Strong Keywords:

Strong keywords have high volume of search and it takes up from single word to even some Geo specific keywords. This depends entirely on the user volume those who are looking for the information. Promoting web page for strong keywords is not so easy as the competition would be much high and as well will have large number of results.

Here few examples for Strong Keywords:

Apple ipad
Toyota

(4) Weak Keywords:

Weak Keywords are low volume keywords but it can produce a decent reference for business enquiries. Normally more than two or more words search keyword comes under weak keywords criteria. For creating week keywords, you can try to add your location to strong keywords and measure the search volume using a keyword tool.

This will work for many industries and you can obtain a decent traffic for start and gradually you can focus strong keywords. There are even week keywords that are not location specific since those keywords might have less competition and search results based on industries you target.

(5) Global Keywords:

Global Keywords are not location specific and most of the keywords are targeted for Dot com search engines and the importance of site listing for Global keywords are not restricted to regional specific search engines.

(6) Local Keywords:

Local Keywords are location specific and the keywords can be targeted for regional search engines. Normally local keywords are specific to your languages and targeted country.

Example for local keywords

Web design London
SEO New York

(7) Misspelled Keywords:

Misspelled Keywords are formed when huge volume of search engine users have problem with spellings and make typo mistakes while searching for information. And also some spell different and it depends on country. In US the spell is 'color' and in Australia it is written as 'Colour'

One good example is 'accommodation' word. Some type as 'accomodation' and 'accomadation'

(8) Sesonal Keywords:
Seasonal Keywords occur only on certain times of the year. A good example is a greeting card site and seasonal product-selling site. Seasonal Keywords competition changes based on the volume of the search.

In Christmas period, users will be searching for Christmas greeting cards and Christmas gifts. Other than November and December these keywords will have least importance.

(9) Long Tail Keywords :
Long tail keyword are combination of highly searched keyword phrases that generates relevant phrases. These long tail in keywords can provide a significant amount of traffic and when promoted well these keywords can provide a good amount of traffic for original keywords that are used to combine to form a long tail keyword.

These type of long tail keywords are used for article title and press release heading and a good long tail keywords can generate higher conversion rate than a normal keyword (Called as short tail keyword).

Keyword Search Operators

Keywords search Operators[2] help a lot with search and to become a real Keyword search expert you can use the following operators like,

(1 ) Plus (+) Operator

+ Operator with a word / keyword helps to search the web results with those specific keyword around content, title, Meta tags and links.

Example:

From Figure (A) you can see a search keyword "business directories" and the results would be varied based on the words directory and directories. The actual search was for "business directories" and not "business directory" but yet you can see results for both directories and directory.

When you use an operator "+" you can see changes in results as seen in Figure (B). The result shows for the word directories.

(2) Minus (-) operator

- Operator with a word / keyword helps to omit those words from search results.

Example:
When you use an operator "-" you can see the web results as seen in Figure (C.) The result will not show search terms that include the word “directories” and show only related to the word “business”.

(3) Related (~) operator

~ Operator with a word / keyword helps to find search results that are related to the search term.

Example:

When you use an operator "~" with the word “directories” as seen in Figure (D), then you can see the results that includes words like "search, guide, white pages and so".

(4) OR operator

OR operator in-between search terms help the user with the results containing either one word.

Example:
When we use OR operator in-between “business” and “directories” words as seen in Figure (E) then the web search results will be displayed containing word business OR directories.

Keywords Role in SEO

Being Keywords as one of the major factor for SEO, here an explanation in one of my Knol about how effectively Keywords can be used for Search Engine promotion.

(a) SEO copy writing - Two Ways
(b) Four Keyword Strategies
(i) Keyword Density
(ii) Keyword Prominence
(iii) Keyword Frequency
(iv) Keyword Proximity
(c) Maintaining the position.
Example on SEO Copy Writing Using Keywords
