History of The World Wide Web - Silver Jubilee Year - 1989 - 2014

12 March 1989

Tim Berners-Lee made a proposal on 12 March 1989 for accessing various files in CERN that grew into the World Wide Web. The  connection between computers for transferring data was done about 20 years back and became the Internet.

At that time, Tim was a software engineer at CERN, the large particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. Many scientists participated in experiments at CERN for extended periods of time, then returned to their laboratories around the world. These scientists left a lot data and results on their computers, but accessing them by others was becoming difficult.  Tim proposed a solution to this problem by proposing that from the information in one computer a person can go the information on another computer through a reference. With that idea, subsequently he understood the  potential of millions of computers connected together through the Internet.

Tim's proposal did not elicit instant welcome. But Tim persisted with his idea and by October of 1990, he had specified the three fundamental technologies that remain the foundation of today’s Web.

HTML: HyperText Markup Language. The publishing format for the Web, including the ability to format documents and link to other documents and resources.
URI: Uniform Resource Identifier. A kind of “address” that is unique to each resource on the Web.
HTTP: Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Allows for the retrieval of linked resources from across the Web.

Tim also wrote the first Web page editor/browser (“WorldWideWeb”) and the first Web server (“httpd“). By the end of 1990, the first Web page was served. By 1991, people outside of CERN joined the new Web community. Very important to the growth of the Web, CERN announced in April 1993 that the World Wide Web technology would be available for anyone to use on a royalty-free basis.

Since that time, the Web has changed the world. It has become the most powerful communication medium for publication as well as interaction, the world has ever known. The Web has changed the way we teach and learn, buy and sell, inform and are informed, agree and disagree, share and collaborate, meet and love, and tackle problems ranging from health to elections.

In 1994, Tim founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) as a place for stakeholders to reach consensus around the specification and guidelines to ensure that the Web works for everyone and that it evolves in a responsible manner.

In 2005, Tim and colleagues started the Web Science Trust (WST). WST is building an international, multidisciplinary research community to examine the World Wide Web as “humanity connected by technology”. WST brings together computer scientists, sociologists, mathematicians, policy experts, entrepreneurs, decision makers and many others from around the world to better understand today’s Web and to develop solutions to guide the use and design of tomorrow’s Web.

ISP's to Monitor File Sharing and Penalize Users?

Music, Films and TV Program producers and distributors are embracing digital media in a big way but are fighting simultaneously to protect their present channels also. They know that their models have to change as cost of duplicating content and transmitting it  has come down drastically in the internet world. But as yet, they have not found a solution that is destroying their current margins and profits. Files can be more easily shared on internet and banning file sharing through agreements is a not a real solution. That is where free website models have done great service to the society.

There needs to be technology that does not create a file when transmitting film, music or tv program on internet. Then a subscriber can only watch a film on his computer and can't create a file and transfer. But such a technology is not there and people are downloading YouTube videos.

The Films association of America is trying to get into an agreement with Internet Service Providers to monitor users' file sharing and penalise them for sharing files with copyright content.

3rd December 2008

Google, the Internet search engine giant, is resorting to austerity measures, The Wall Street Journal reported.

http://infotech.indiatimes.com/News/Look_how_Google_is_cutting_costs/articleshow/3788131.cms

Prominent among them include cutting new projects.

Schmidt , CEO, said the company is “not going to give” an engineer 20 people to work with on certain experimental projects anymore.

Top executives say they remain committed to projects they believe hold long-term potential, but are prepared to “starve” lesser ones.

Profits down in Dec-08 quarter

Revenues increased to $4.2 billiion ($5.7 billion including adsense share of partners). But earnins were only $382 million or $1.21 per share. It is a drop of 68% from the same quarter a year ago. The profit was hit by a $1.5 billion charge for writedowns on investments like AOL and Clearwire and the cost of issuing new stockoptions to employees hwose existing warrants  were below the current share price of the company. Therefore CEO argued that Google has a healthy business in the tough economic climate.
But, he accepted that the future could unchartered territory as conditions could worsen due to recession.

Google - First Quarter 2009 Results

Q1 Financial Summary

Google reported revenues of $5.51 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2009, an increase of 6% compared to the first quarter of 2008 and a decrease of 3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. Google reports its revenues, consistent with GAAP, on a gross basis without deducting traffic acquisition costs (TAC). In the first quarter of 2009, TAC totaled $1.44 billion, or 27% of advertising revenues.

GAAP operating income for the first quarter of 2009 was $1.88 billion, or 34% of revenues. This compares to GAAP operating income of $1.86 billion, or 33% of revenues, in the fourth quarter of 2008.

GAAP net income for the first quarter of 2009 was $1.42 billion as compared to $382 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.

GAAP EPS for the first quarter of 2009 was $4.49 on 317 million diluted shares outstanding, compared to $1.21 for the fourth quarter of 2008 on 317 million diluted shares outstanding.

Google Sites Revenues – Google-owned sites generated revenues of $3.70 billion, or 67% of total revenues, in the first quarter of 2009. This represents a 9% increase over first quarter 2008 revenues of $3.40 billion and a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 revenues of $3.81 billion.

Google Network Revenues – Google’s partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $1.64 billion, or 30% of total revenues, in the first quarter of 2009. This represents a 3% decrease from first quarter 2008 network revenues of $1.69 billion and a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 network revenues of $1.69 billion.

International Revenues – Revenues from outside of the United States totaled $2.88 billion, representing 52% of total revenues in the first quarter of 2009, compared to 51% in the first quarter of 2008 and 50% in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Employees – On a worldwide basis, Google employed 20,164 full-time employees as of March 31, 2009, down from 20,222 full-time employees as of December 31, 2008.

Decrease in Revenue Quarter by Quarter

Google reported revenues of $5.51 billion in the first quarter of 2009, representing a 6% increase over first quarter 2008 revenues of $5.19 billion and a 3% decrease from fourth quarter 2008 revenues of $5.70 billion.

Source: http://investor.google.com/releases/2009Q1_google_earnings.html

While the revenue has declined quarter by quarter, the CEO seems to have indicated  a feeling of stength that Google can handle the cost side and weather the recession. That is a good news for google's partners. Google has done some cost cutting and was able to control the cost on a stable or decreasing revenue environment.

Social Media and Languages Learning

Social media, media in which individuals are contributing on their own initiatives on subjects and on topics where they have interest, knowledge and expertise is providing unique content that is helpful to a niches of people looking for a particular way of presenting the subject.  Professional media would not have been able to create so much content with that great variety. It is because professionals expect to be paid every day for their efforts and hence they can not cater to small niches. But a large number of social media contributors are first contributing for the thrill of contributing. Some of them hope to receive some income, but even if they do not receive, they are still content with the satisfaction that they created some useful items for people to use. No doubt still large number of social media contributors say a million are receiving some regular monthly payment. But a million across the world is not a big number. Social media is thriving by providing an opportunity to even to a billion people to contribute an item or other to the pool of digitized knowledge.

I am happy to see number of resources being created in social media to learn languages. Presently I am doing a serious effort to learn Japanese and collecting various online resources in this regard. I am collecting the resources into an online book on learning Japanese.  I am happy to see a Japanese to Telugu dictionary today. (Japanese to Telugu dictionary) The dictionary invites all to contribute to improve the dictionary further. It is a good way using large number of people to develop a knowledge resource.

You are the Hero of Internet - Reddit Cofounder

Reddit cofounder, Alexis Ohanian urges all internet users to stand up and protect internet.

The free to write internet has provided an opportunity to share their unique knowledge, experience and thinking with the rest of the world. Any regulation of this network, must not hinder the this process and limit participation to few individuals who know more legalese and litigation and less about the pheonomena with which only few individuals are familiar with. We do not need journalists to report our answers to their queries in their own words. We want to share with the world our experience in our worlds. Whatever journalists may do can be secondary reporting or curation. But primary experience sharing has to be by individuals who took part in the event.  This opportunity gives every internet user to be the hero of internet.

Online Video (YouTube) has to the potential to deliver $100 million to a top Movie

Avatar earned $760 million in  North American Movie territory.
http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/
On Internet as a rerun movie (say after six months of its release in theatres) it can have a billion views and can earn $100 million. Is it a good revenue source?

The revenue potential is being calculated on the basis of 10 ads in the full film and at $10 cpm giving $10 per 100 views for $0.1 per view.

Learned Experts and Internet - Their Influence growing or diminishing?

Andrew Keen gives the opinion that internet is undermining the authority of learned experts. Is it? It may have undermined the incomes of some of the currently successful media businesses. But has it enabled large number of learned people to communicate with larger number of people and thus enhanced their ability to serve more people with their knowledge? Yes it certainly helped large number of faculty members of top institutions to publish their output and make it accessible to global audience. This enabled many people who are searching for answers to find more useful answers. The print media operated under constraints and hence could not provide opportunity to large number of learned people to convert their ideas into accessible products. Digital media is much more economical and hence it provided the opportunity to much larger people and the society really benefited from it.

YouTube Videos for Webmasters

Google Webmaster Tools verification

Youtube Videos for Webmasters

______________________________________________________________________

Why verify your site?

Privacy is important to Google, which is why Google Webmaster Tools asks you to prove you own a site before showing you stats and data about it. Verification doesn't affect PageRank or affect your site's performance in Google's search results.
To verify that you own a site, you can either add a meta tag to your home page (proving that you have access to the source files), or upload a specific HTML file to your server (proving that you have access to the server). Webmaster Tools will check to see that the file or tag is present. If it is, Google considers you a site owner and will show you site details.

FAQs

Q: I'm getting an error when trying to verify my site with an HTML file, even though my file is visible in my browser.
A:
Look at the specific error that Webmaster Tools is showing and read the help content for that error.
The Live HTTP Headers
Firefox extension or an online HTTP result code viewer such as Web-Sniffer can be helpful in figuring out what status code a page is returning. Your homepage should return a HTTP result code 200. If you use file-based verification, the verification file should also return a HTTP result code 200 and must contain only the content provided by Webmaster Tools.

Q: Does it matter whether my Webmaster Tools verification meta tag is in HTML or XHTML?
A:
We'll be able to find your meta tag no matter which format you use. Webmaster Tools provides the meta tag in XHTML by default, but you're welcome to change it to HTML; this won't prevent you from verifying ownership of your site. The meta tag version that you choose does not affect Google's ability to crawl and index your website.

Q: How can I give someone else access to my Webmaster Tools account?
A: Verified owners can add additional owners to a site.  Click the "Manage" link next to the site's name on the home page and select "Add or remove owners" to go to the Verificatio details page.  From this page, you can click the "Add an owner..." button and add another Google account.

Which method should I use - meta tag, HTML, DNS or Analytics code?

If you can't add files to your server (for example, if you create your site using a tool such as Blogger), adding a meta tag or verifying ownership via Google Analytics is the best way. If you have direct access to your server, you may find it easier and faster to upload an HTML file. If you access Webmaster Tools via a web hoster such as GoDaddy, your site is already verified.  Verification with DNS requires a bit more technical know-how, but allows you to verify ownership of an entire domain (and all of the sites within that domain). Other hosting services provide their own procedures for verification in Google Webmaster Tools. Check with your provider for more information.
The verification by meta tag shows to some extent if the Google verification bot can parse the content of your home page, so it gives this extra information compared to verification by file upload.

How to verify a site

  1. Sign into Google Webmaster Tools with your Google Account.
  2. Click Verify next to the site you want.
  3. In the Choose verification method list, select the verification method that works best for you.

Potential errors

Occasionally, you might receive an error when verifying your site. These can occur for a number of reasons:

DNS and server errors and timeouts
: These can prevent Google from looking up your domain name. If you get a message that Google couldn't look up your domain name because of an error or a timeout, make sure your domain is resolving correctly and try again. Also, check in case your server is down or overloaded and responding slowly. If your server is repeatedly unreachable, you may wish to contact your hoster for additional help.

HTML file errors: The most common errors happen because the file name is incorrect or the file hasn't been uploaded to the directory listed by the Verify button. Don't modify the HTML verification file in any way - just download it from Webmaster Tools, and upload without changes to your server.

Meta tag errors
: Make sure that you've copied and pasted the meta tag to your site's home page - the page your server returns when someone requests your site. Also, make sure that it's in the <HEAD> section of the page, like this:
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Your Title</TITLE>
<meta name="google-site-verification" content="String_we_ask_for" />
</HEAD> <BODY>
Try to have as correct (X)HTML mark-up as possible, to help the verification bot parse correctly your home page and find the meta verification tag,
If you wish to check your server access logs when you have a verification error, the Google verification bot identifies itself as "Google-Sitemaps/1.0". For information on verifying subdomains and subdirectories, allowing multiple users and other issues see site verification.

Note: Keep the Webmaster Tools window open.
  6. In this step, you'll create a new meta tag using the ID Google provides. Copy the following text and paste it into the same text file:  %22%20%2F%3E%3Cmeta name=%22google-site-verification%22 content=%22
  7. Copy the ID from the tag provided by Google, and paste it at the end of the string above. It will look something like this:  %22%20%2F%3E%3Cmeta name=%22google-site-verification%22 content=%22uEtG4638yYT42PzvFua6iiR1v%2BiJ2lfnUpZ/cJPdzKM=
Note: If the tag provided by Google contains "+", you'll need to replace it with %2B.
  8. In Office Live, open your site's home page (default.aspx).
  9. Open Page Properties and paste the string above into the Keywords box, after any keywords you have already added. The Keywords box does have a size limit, so check to see that the whole tag was pasted correctly.
  10. Go back to Webmaster Tools, and click Verify.

Verifying on Netfirms

  1. Login to your Netfirms Control Panel.
  2. Click Applications.
  3. Select Website Tools.
  4. Click Webmaster Tools.
  5. In the Add Webmaster Tools section, use the pull-down menu to select a domain you wish to setup with Google Webmaster Tools.
  6. To add a default Sitemap for your site, click the corresponding Add button.
You can either use a default sitemap.xml that is created for you, or a customized sitemap.xml file that you or a 3rd party program has created. Using the interface you can submit either of those to Google.
Completing the above steps will also accomplish the following:
  • Create a Google Webmaster Tools account on behalf of the registrant.
  • Submit the selected domain name to Google’s search engine for indexing.
  • A confirmation file in the selected domain’s home directory will be created to allow Google to visit that link. The file created looks similar to: googlefdh35sdh48dfhr734.html.

The required bandwidth for satisfying any among of demand can be provided through cloud computing infrastructure. If more people book the movie more bandwidth is provided and less number of people book the movie less bandwidth is provided.

In this article on Read Write Web, it is stated that Movie industry made #30 billion in box-office receipts and $87 billion in total receipts.

If a digital channel is opened and every day 100 million watch the movies on the first day of its release by paying $1, the industry can get $100 million a day and that amounts to $36,500 million a year or $36.5 billion a year.
